Austin’s Trail of Lights

The Trail of Lights is an authentically Austin community celebration and one of the largest holiday events in the city. It has received national recognition but, despite many outside influences, stays true to its Austin roots as it grows in spirit, size and popularity each year.

The Trail of Lights originated back in 1965 and was then known as “Yule Fest,” a gift to the city of Austin from the Parks and Recreation Department. Back then, it involved the lighting of a single Yule log to symbolize community spirit. Over the years, that tradition has grown to more than 40 displays, 2 million lights and a parade of family-fun holiday activities that draw thousands of locals and visitors to Austin each year.

With a full calendar of events that includes the famous Zilker Tree Lighting, live music every night, a pre-opening Fun Run and the Night Lights Preview Party one day before the Opening Event celebration, you may want to purchase your tickets well ahead of time. The Trail of Lights opens December 9 and closes December 23, but tickets are available beginning November 8.
