I ♥ NY 12 Months of Cocktails at AKB New York

The Inspiration
The Big Apple

New York City is one of the most influential cities in the world. It’s inspired artists and architects, politicians and chefs, immigrants and lovers. It’s been the backdrop for plays, poets and proposals. And it’s been the muse for more than a few cocktail creators.

Think of what you know about Manhattan. What comes to mind? For many visitors (and locals, too), the skyscrapers stand out. Some enjoy the blending of flavors in this melting pot. Others reflect on the famous New Year’s Eve ball drop. Many folks who refer to the city as “The Big Apple” don’t realize that the moniker came from stable hands in 1920s New Orleans talking about visiting NYC, where the racetracks were considered more impressive. Midtown’s Garment District has a long and storied history. And the iconic New York logo created in 1977 by graphic designer Milton Glaser? It’s the graphic epitome of a simple salute to the city that never sleeps.

The Recipe

Cliff Ramirez, manager — food + beverage at AKB in New York, concocted this cocktail for February (the month of love) with these classic NYC images in mind. Combining applejack brandy and bourbon with orgeat, grenadine and lemon — then mixing in fresh apple and pear puree and adding a touch of allspice dram — the various flavors seamlessly mingle together — just like New Yorkers. Poured into a tall Collins glass, the drink is reminiscent of the city’s towering buildings. It’s garnished with a heart-shaped apple slice affixed by a mini clothespin representing our design-centric neighborhood. And the accompanying maraschino “cherry on the top” is a celebratory nod to the Times Square Ball.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce applejack brandy
  • 1 ounce Amador bourbon
  • 3/4 ounce orgeat
  • 1/2 ounce maraschino cherry grenadine
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 ounce pear purée
  • 1 ounce apple purée
  • 1 bar spoon allspice dram
  • 1 thin-sliced apple, heart-shapes
  • Maraschino cherry

Directions

To a shaker, add first 8 ingredients and ice. Shake well, then double-strain into a Collins glass and add ice. Garnish with apple slices and flag with a maraschino cherry.

Cheers!
